March 2023
It’s performance season here at ArtSparks and we couldn’t be more excited!
This year’s curricular theme is based on the parable The Hummingbird as told by environmental
champion, Wangari Maathai. The story follows this littlest of creatures as it attempts to put out
a forest fire one drop of water at a time. The Hummingbird illustrates a poignant message: each
one of us can make a difference, no matter how small we are or how big a problem seems to
be, if we “do the best we can”. Throughout the school year, ArtSparks’ dancers were
introduced to Maathai’s Four Core Values: self-empowerment; love for the environment;
gratitude and respect for Earth’s resources; and a spirit of service. Lessons extended beyond
the classroom as we challenged children to find ways in which they could be helpful in their
schools, homes, and community.
You won’t want to miss this moving tale as told by 400 Cuyahoga Falls 3 rd graders on March 23rd and another 450 Akron Public School children in shows on May 15th, 16th , and 17th! (See times
and locations below.)
As always, we couldn’t make these incredible shows happen with out the support of our school
partners, foundations, and patrons like you who care so deeply about the children of Summit
County. I thank you for your continued support and hope you will join me in applauding their
success at an upcoming performance!
Warmly,
Kara
